Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hamilton, Virginia. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we are specialists in hair analysis, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are used. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, the preferred drug testing method has increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine methods. Hair follicle drug testing is utilized by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. Its main advantage is a detection window lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision and resistant to cheating. For recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record of alcohol and drug presence by trapping biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month period of alcohol and drug usage. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is perfect for testing and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable portion of body hair can be acquired. When we discuss head hair, we're solely referencing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory framework. This entails confirming the integrity and shipment of the specimen, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be court-acceptable. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter span for detection.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It can outline a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hamilton, VA, hair follicle testing shows significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Notably, hair testing provides superior detection accuracy, reliably revealing substance use over a prolonged period. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to a shorter detection window, hair tests offer comprehensive insights into long-term use, thus ensuring reliability in substance tracking.

Employers value hair follicle tests for their comprehensive nature. While urine tests detect recent usage, hair tests cast a wider net, revealing patterns of use over months. The method's accuracy offers peace of mind, as the risk of false readings is minimized, ensuring businesses in Hamilton make informed hiring decisions.

Extended Detection Window

Drug detection windows are significantly extended with hair follicle testing in Hamilton, VA. This method offers an analysis period of up to 90 days, far exceeding that of urine tests, which are limited to recent consumption. Such an extended window provides employers a detailed view of an individual's substance use history, facilitating informed decisions.

With the ability to detect prolonged use, hair follicle tests are invaluable for comprehensive assessments. Employers looking for a broad and thorough overview of an applicant’s or employee's substance history benefit from the elongated detection period, which ensures transparency and diligence in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Hamilton, VA is its resilience against tampering. This tamper-resistant nature ensures that the integrity of the testing process is upheld.

For employers, the assurance provided by the tamper-proof nature of hair tests is invaluable. It eliminates concerns over the manipulation of samples, guaranteeing that the test outcomes reflect true substance use. This security fosters confidence in the results, supporting effective and legitimate drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
