Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests available in Hayfield, Virginia. Whether you're seeking detection for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing is supported by nationwide testing facilities, each equipped to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. The analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common procedure over the years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer it over the usual urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers all use it. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended drug-use detection window of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection method, reducing the risk of cheating. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a prolonged account of substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When gathered close to the scalp, it can offer an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only the scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs confirmation to be valid in court. Any presumptively positive screening samples necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex method.

Verification of positive screen results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as required prior to Confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, leading to more accurate results.
  • Supplies historical information: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the scalp-based follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Hayfield, VA

Comparatively, hair testing offers superior accuracy and reliability over urine tests. Its extended detection period ensures that substances are identified even if they were consumed long before the testing period. Contrast that with urine tests, which usually capture recent usage, allowing hair tests to provide a more thorough substance history.

The reliability of hair follicle testing stems from its consistency in results. This method excels in detecting previously missed instances, making it a preferred alternative for more comprehensive drug investigations.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing presents the advantage of a longer detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This capability provides employers with a broader understanding of an individual's drug usage history. It enables a comprehensive view that isn't confined to a small testing window, which is typical in more conventional methods.

For employers in Hayfield, VA, gaining insights over an extensive period is vital. Knowing the potential substance habits of employees or job candidates helps inform better hiring or maintenance practices, ultimately enhancing workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
