Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Haysi, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with facilities across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is generally necessary. Hair assessments examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Nowadays, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle analyses. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts demand hair drug tests rather than common urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, judiciary bodies, and individuals on probation. The principal advantage of hair tests is their extended detection scope, covering up to 90 days, performed under strict observation, making deceit nearly impossible. Still, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug usage due to the presence of biomarkers in the hair fibers as they develop. When the sample is taken close to the scalp, it provides a detection window of up to roughly three months for substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional evaluations, or panels over 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. A jeweler’s scale should be used for weight measurement. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s database. This phase includes ensuring the specimen’s integrity during sealing and shipment, assigning a distinctive LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing information not captured by a digital chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary examination for substance misuse. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a Screening’s positive result must undergo verification to be legally valid. Samples that presumptively test positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For any presumptively positive sample at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original collection for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at less concentrated levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is recognized as the most challenging technique.

Verification of positive screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The entire testing procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 credentials.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify substance usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Patterns of use: This testing can reveal drug use trends over time, beyond just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for hair to register drug evidence.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis is generally pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair hue and individual hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
