Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services within Henry, Virginia. Our focus is hair testing, facilitating both drug and alcohol evaluations through centers available across all U.S cities, including hair tests which require 1.5-2 inches of scalp or body hair. Hair analysis can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options tailored to specific needs.

In recent developments, the choice of drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts frequently opt for hair drug tests rather than traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve those adhering to strict drug-free mandates, such as zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, or probationary monitoring. A notable advantage is the extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection procedures enhancing test integrity. Despite this, urine tests lead accuracy in screening recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We advise measuring the specimen using a precision scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referencing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial input of a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in many samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary validation.

If a sample is potentially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lesser concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine screenings which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty of manipulation: It is exceedingly challenging to alter a hair drug test, rendering the findings more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Conditions such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though extensively referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
