Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hollins, Virginia. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing with facilities across the nation that can conduct hair analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers. The key advantage is the longer detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent (under 5 days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. This method offers a comprehensive account of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's growing strand. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal traces of alcohol and drugs for a period extending up to about three months. The sampling process is straightforward, the chance of tampering is low, and samples can be transported with ease.

An ideal 1.5-inch segment, equivalent to about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) collected closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial screening and eventual confirmation. For tests including EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In instances where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. ‘Head hair’ pertains exclusively to scalp hair. ‘Body hair’ encompasses all other types of hair (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves checking the sample for proper sealing and shipment, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though Screening provides an economical means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal acceptability. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should the Screening indicate a presumptive positive outcome, more hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than those in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

To confirm any positive result from Screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo a washing stage prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a brief detection scope.
  • Resistant to alteration: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronological usage data: It outlines a timeline of drug use behavior over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs generally require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair samples.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
