In Horse Pasture, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in this area, we provide testing facilities in various cities across the nation, including the capability to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options. Typically, hair from the crown measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is required, though body hair can be used in many cases.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years, replacing standard urine tests for numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. These tests are favored by those with zero-tolerance policies due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, supervised collection, and difficulty to manipulate. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample entry into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it serves as a cost-effective method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab processing cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Delivers historic data: It can show a trend of drug use over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
