Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Huntington, Virginia. If you're seeking a hair test for substances or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing, accessible at testing facilities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. This test can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly preferred in substance testing, with many employers, courts, and addiction specialists opting for them over urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers are among the frequent users of this method. The test offers an extended detection window for drug use—up to 90 days—and is very difficult to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of an extending hair strand. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advised. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This phase ensures that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any further data logging not available via an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original batch and prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the hardest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The total process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenges to deceit: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical context: It reveals a record of substance use over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Differentiations in results: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Huntington, VA, hair follicle tests provide several advantages over traditional urine tests. Firstly, they offer a much longer detection window, capturing substance use over extensive periods. Secondly, hair tests are nearly impossible to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results. Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Huntington, VA extends the detection period for drug use significantly, up to 90 days. This extensive window allows employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history, offering a more comprehensive perspective than shorter-term tests. The ability to view such a broad timeframe is invaluable for making informed decisions regarding employment and compliance with drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
