Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Jefferson, Virginia. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this testing method, with centers located across the country capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used for analysis, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended drug use detection window, which can reach up to 90 days. While nearly impossible to tamper with, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can offer a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can yield up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to gather, not easily tampered with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening do need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carried out under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historical data: It can show a trend of drug use over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Jefferson, VA:

Employers and organizations prefer hair follicle testing for superior detection capabilities over traditional urine tests.
Its primary advantage is its ability to detect a broader range of substances over a more extended period, enhancing accuracy and reliability in substance use monitoring.

Compared to urine tests, which have a limited detection window, hair tests provide a detailed snapshot of an individual's substance history, reducing the risk of recent drug use going undetected.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Jefferson, VA, is unmatched, reaching up to 90 days of drug use history. This comprehensive insight allows employers to make informed decisions regarding candidate suitability and employee behavior.

Unlike other tests, hair follicle testing offers a broad capture of drug use, making it invaluable for businesses seeking to maintain integrity and compliance in their operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
