In King and Queen Court House, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug analyses. Should you require tests for drugs or alcohol, and particularly hair testing, our specialized centers are found in all cities throughout the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary from the head or body to proceed with such screenings. These hair evaluations are capable of detecting drugs and alcohol/ETG, alongside bespoke testing solutions.

The inclination toward hair follicle drug testing over urine tests has been evident in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse authorities prefer hair drug tests, which are demanded of those on probation or under zero-tolerance policies. The predominant advantage hair tests hold is their extended detection timeline, up to 90 days post-consumption, with a closely supervised collection protocol, making manipulation extremely difficult. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most credible for identifying recent consumption within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by imprisoning biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair sampling can offer a detection span of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and conveniently shipped.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests that exceed 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Although it is an economical method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby rendering hair drug screening especially challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed as required before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and as per the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Enhanced security: It is notably tough to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, thus enhancing their reliability.
  • Historical insight: This method can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of immediate detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
