In King William, VA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers accessible nationwide, including all cities. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head is typically required, or body hair can be used. Hair tests provide analysis for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

The hair follicle drug test method has gained popularity in recent years for drug testing protocols. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, legal courts, and probation services. They offer extended detection for up to 90 days, collected observably, reducing the chance of manipulation. Yet, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use detection, typically within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become recognized as an effective method for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered close to the scalp, it offers up to around a 3-month span for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, a similar amount of body hair can be considered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types, like facial and armpit hair.

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory procedure for determining a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into the laboratory’s records. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes extra data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial rapid review for substances of abuse. While it's a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive result in Screening demands further confirmation for courtroom validity. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in Screening, more hair from the original sample is taken and set for Extraction. Here, substances are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), which explains why hair drug tests are the most challenging to execute.

Positive results from Screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is cleaned prior to confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the guidance of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings track drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceptionally difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Chronological data: Offers a timeframe of drug use trends, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: There's a delay of about 5-7 days before substances become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Comparatively, hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing alternatives.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite quantities in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strands and not the below-scalp follicles.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Trumps Urine Tests in King William, VA reveals clear advantages. Hair testing detects drug use over extended periods, depicting a comprehensive usage history, unlike traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
