In Laymantown, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, specializing in both drug and alcohol tests. We maintain testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, sourced either from the head or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a frequent choice for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for this over the conventional urine test. These tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies and are favored by courts and probation officers. Their key advantage lies in an extended detection window of up to 90 days and an observed collection process, making them hard to tamper with. However, when testing for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The absorbing properties of hair allow it to capture biomarkers within the strands as it grows. If taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol or drug consumption over a period of up to 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equal to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is necessary to obtain 100mg—a suitable amount for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is needed. It is advised to use a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a compatible quantity of body hair can be used. It should be noted that 'head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' denotes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Framework

The laboratory examination of a drug test sample involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of officially entering a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that the electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening is an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use evidence in the bulk of samples, any positive screenings must be verified to stand as valid in legal settings. Samples that test positive in the Screening stage require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drug compounds are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug tests.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcomes is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples yielding presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation is subject to inspection under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guiding principles and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have briefer detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering hair drug test outcomes is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use patterns over months rather than immediate use.

Challenges:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by hair color and personal differences in hair growth.

Caution: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests," these tests precisely analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Laymantown, VA, offer several advantages over traditional urine tests. They provide superior detection and reliability, allowing for a more thorough and longer detection period of drug use. With a highly accurate analysis, the likelihood of erroneous results is minimized, setting a higher standard for substance detection.

Extended Detection Window

Utilizing hair follicle testing provides a prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, offering employers in Laymantown, VA, a complete view of an individual’s substance use history. This extended period is beneficial for evaluating consistent patterns of substance use, helping make informed decisions in the workplace context.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
