Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Lowes Island, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities nationwide, including all cities, for such tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head crown or body suffices. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific purposes.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become a preferred method for performing drug assessments. Many businesses, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair tests over conventional urine tests. This testing is favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and individuals under probationary conditions. The primary advantage of a hair test is its longer timeframe to detect drug use, up to 90 days, gathered through a monitored collection, and it's extremely difficult to manipulate. However, to detect recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument in detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is effortless to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. In the context of head hair, we are specifically discussing scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in court. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and primed for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: A hair drug test is incredibly challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical information: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
