Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Madisonville, Virginia. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers available in every city Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

In recent years, implementing drug tests has leaned heavily towards hair follicle examinations. Many employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug screenings over traditional urine analyses. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals opt for these tests. A hair test's advantage lies in its extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) from the area nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for testing and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional analyses, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab process for processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample processing in a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial, rapid appraisal for potential drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to disregard drug usage in most samples, any positive screen result necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening notoriously challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screening result. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating hair drug test results is notably difficult, enhancing their accuracy.
  • Provides historical insights: The test can deliver a record of drug consumption over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Madisonville, VA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair analysis can detect drug use over a longer duration, usually up to 90 days, while urine tests are limited to a shorter detection window.

Employers and legal professionals prefer hair testing as it reflects a more comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history, reducing the chances of recent abstinence masking habitual use as seen in urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Madisonville, VA, offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, giving a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. This allows employers to make informed decisions about potential hires or current employees.

Unlike traditional methods, hair testing captures long-term drug usage patterns, offering a more detailed timeline of consumption, which is crucial for understanding an applicant's or employee's past behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Madisonville, VA, hair follicle tests are known for their tamper-resistant nature. The method significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, providing reliable and unquestionable results for employers and legal authorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
