In Melfa, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, we've established testing centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Our analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a popular method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer this over standard urine tests. With a detection period of up to 90 days, hair tests are nearly foolproof, unlike urine tests which are more accurate for recent use, specifically within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the continually growing hair shaft. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil in diameter) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid check for substance abuse. Despite being a cost-effective measure to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over approximately 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, which enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage across a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
