In Mineral, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Unlike traditional urine examinations, our hair testing services cover all cities nationwide, requiring only 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. This method accurately detects drugs, alcohol, or custom-tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle tests have become increasingly favored for drug evaluations over recent years. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation officers often choose hair tests over urine ones. The main advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, combined with an observable collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use within five days, the urine test remains exceptional.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a chronological record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both analysis and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system, which includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome from Screenings must be corroborated to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate additional verification.

For samples tentatively positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing among the most challenging methodologies.

The process for confirming any positive screen results involves using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all tentative positive samples are washed if required. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Attempting to cheat on a hair drug test is significantly challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers an overview of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: It typically requires 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mineral, VA, hair follicle drug testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests. Accuracy and reliability are where hair testing shines, detecting a broader range of substances over extended periods. Unlike urine tests, which have limited detection windows, hair tests reveal drug use patterns across months, providing a comprehensive overview that improves screening effectiveness for employers.

While urine tests are common, their susceptibility to manipulation lowers trust. Hair follicle testing, by contrast, significantly reduces this risk. Its superior detection accuracy, paired with a foolproof collection method, offers more reliable results in Mineral, VA, enhancing workplace confidence in drug screening protocols and ensuring better hiring practices.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is invaluable in Mineral, VA, for its extended detection window. Whereas urine tests cover shorter periods, hair tests offer a 90-day insight into substance use history. This long-term perspective benefits employers by uncovering consistent patterns, aiding in making well-informed decisions. It provides a clear view of applicant or employee habits over time.

Employers in Mineral, VA, gain a competitive edge with hair testing, which discloses long-term drug use that other methods overlook. Its extensive reach, covering up to three months, substantiates claims of maintaining drug-free environments, and ensures compliance, ultimately building more trustful professional relationships with newfound transparency in candidate evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Mineral, VA, the hair follicle test provides a substantially tamper-resistant option compared to traditional methods. Unlike urine tests, difficult to adulterate due to their direct collection process, hair tests ensure authenticity and trust in outcomes. This level of security in drug testing deters attempts at sample manipulation, ensuring legitimate and clear results.

Hair testing is a reliable choice in Mineral, VA, providing results that withstand attempts at adulteration. The collected hair sample, often under supervision, minimizes tampering opportunities. This method ensures genuine results, promoting fairness and consistency in workplace drug testing procedures, and offering significant peace of mind to all stakeholders involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
