In Moseley, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, trust that we excel in this area with testing sites available nationwide for your convenience. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is used from the crown or body. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in recent years as a preference for drug testing. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over urine analysis. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation assignments utilize this method due to its extended detection timeline—up to 90 days—collected under supervised conditions and resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands hold a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair is a suitable alternative. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab procedure for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is entered into the lab system. This phase verifies the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary scan for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be considered for legal proceedings. Samples testing positively in Screening need additional verification.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Reduced chances of manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It highlights an extended pattern of drug usage, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
