At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Sidney, Virginia. If you're looking for hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have nationwide testing facilities capable of conducting such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

Recently, there has been a shift towards hair follicle drug tests in drug testing methodologies. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers. Their main advantage is a longer drug use detection window, typically lasting up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that is extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged as an effective approach to detecting drug and alcohol intake, hair testing provides a comprehensive history of such substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. Obtaining samples near the scalp offers a detection window of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily shippable.

To acquire an optimal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair. For tests that include EtG, add-ons, or exceed 10 panels, it's advised to utilize 150mg of hair, measurable with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers solely to hair on the scalp, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

At the Accessioning stage, the sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional unexplored data entry that wasn’t captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step serves as a preliminary check for drug presence. Although a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screening results require confirmation for legal credibility. Any specimens deemed presumptively positive must undergo secondary verification.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair from the original collection is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drug substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), accounting for hair drug testing's complexity.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are washed as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can indicate drug use over a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine testing has a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to deception: Due to the difficulty of cheating, hair drug tests yield more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks usage history: Capable of illustrating a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • More costly: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis concentrates on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mount Sidney, VA, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are clear. Hair tests boast superior detection accuracy and reliability, making them the preferred choice over traditional urine tests. While urine tests are limited to short-term detection, hair tests provide a broader look into an individual's substance history, offering a more dependable and accurate assessment for employers and legal authorities.

Extended Detection Window

A key benefit of hair follicle testing in Mount Sidney, VA, is its extended detection window. Unlike other drug tests, hair follicle tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days. This long detection period provides employers with a more comprehensive view of a candidate's or employee's substance use history, helping make informed decisions based on long-term patterns rather than short-term situations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Mount Sidney, VA, hair follicle tests are largely tamper-resistant, significantly reducing the possibility of sample adulteration. This makes them a reliable choice for those who need unquestionable results. The testing process involves collecting hair samples in an observed manner, ensuring that the results are free from manipulation or substitution attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
