Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Solon, Virginia. Whether for drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with facilities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has shifted more towards hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation due to their superior detection window of up to 90 days. This method is highly reliable, observed during collection, and difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly considered a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. The strands capture long-term alcohol and drug histories by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If head hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test lab procedure primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening effectively eliminates drug usage for most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening do need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over extended periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Fails to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Discrepancies in outcomes: Hair color and personal variations in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests," the examination evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When weighing the options between hair follicle and urine drug tests in Mount Solon, VA, the benefits of hair testing are clear. Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering superior accuracy and a longer detection window. This method captures a broader scope of substance use history, reflecting drug usage effectively. With its robust reliability, hair testing lessens the potential for tampering compared to traditional urine testing options, ensuring more dependable results.

Extended Detection Window

In Mount Solon, VA, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing provides a detailed account of an individual's drug use over approximately 90 days. This comprehensive view is instrumental for employers seeking to understand a candidate's or employee's substance use history, surpassing the limitations of shorter-term testing methods. Such a prolonged detection period ensures that hair follicle testing provides insight into long-term trends in substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Mount Solon, VA, offers a tamper-resistant method for drug analysis, significantly reducing risks related to sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are less prone to manipulation, ensuring that results remain unquestionable and objectively reliable. This resistance to tampering enhances confidence in the testing process, offering undeniable results that uphold the integrity of substance use screening processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
