Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Natural Bridge, Virginia. If a drug or alcohol test via hair is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist with facilities across all cities Nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are necessary. Tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG or other specialized hair testing.

More frequently in recent years, drug testing methods have incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair analysis is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation. The test's main advantage is its extensive drug detection span, up to 90 days, gathered under direct supervision, and nearly fail-proof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means to rule out drug usage for most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to compromise a hair drug test, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical use pattern: Capable of illustrating a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Detection requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
