Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Newington, Virginia. If a hair test is your requirement, we specialize in it and provide locations nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often choose it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict drug use policies, courts, and for those on probation. Their main advantage is a prolonged detection window—up to 90 days—collected under supervision and hard to sabotage. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can provide up to a three-month detection window for both alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Our reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, any positive result in the screen needs confirmation for legal validity. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is more complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to fake: Hair drug tests are tough to compromise, leading to more reliable results.
  • Documents historical usage: They can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot indicate recent usage: There is a lag of about 5-7 days before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs more cost than other testing methods.
  • Discrepancies in findings: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
