Offering thorough hair follicle drug evaluations across Newport News, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing is the go-to for both hair drug and alcohol examinations nationwide. Regardless of the city's location, our centers are ready to conduct these intricate tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required. These tests can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as per unique needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug assessments have become a preferred method over conventional ones. Employers, judicial systems, and substance counselors now often opt for hair testing over urine tests. These tests are critical for organizations with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. Their extended detection window—up to 90 days—provides an accurate history of drug use, impossible to manipulate, though urine tests remain preferable for recent 5-day use identification.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means to uncover drug and alcohol use. By encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, it provides a comprehensive record of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and it is convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for both initial screening and verification. For those requiring EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to verify the sample's weight. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. In contrast, "body hair" encompasses other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory carries out four fundamental stages to process drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample within a lab's system. It includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial, efficient assessment for drug abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most cases, any positive Screening findings must be verified for court acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need additional validation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples receive necessary washing before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Records usage patterns: It unveils drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle tests over urine assessments in Newport News, VA, are clear. Hair testing boasts superior detection reliability, catching substances consumed up to 90 days prior, unlike traditional urine tests, which can easily overlook usage beyond recent weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
