Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Newsoms, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and maintains facilities in every city across the nation qualified to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for substance testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly preferring hair tests over urine tests. Employers with no drug-use tolerance, judicial systems, and probationary supervision find hair tests advantageous. The major benefit includes a longer detection interval for drug usage, up to 90 days, using a monitored collection that is nearly impossible to falsify. For detecting use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It provides an extended history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer as much as a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid assessment for drug abuse. While screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires verification to be court-admissible. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show preliminary positive results are washed before confirmation as required. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to detect drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter period.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, hence enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal patterns of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
