In the Newtown district of Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in this method, they provide convenient testing centers nationwide capable of conducting hair tests for drugs or alcohol. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Their hair tests can detect substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, alongside other custom options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. Whether for employers with strict drug policies, court orders, or probation requirements, hair testing is now favored over traditional urine tests. Its key advantage is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, providing an observed and cheat-proof collection process. Nevertheless, urine tests remain precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term ledger for alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs of around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The core steps in the laboratory assessment of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s system. This process entails ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial expeditious examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most specimens, a positive screen needs verification before being permissible in a legal setting. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are pulled from hair at a markedly reduced concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to undertake.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are rinsed before verification as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Verification undergoes examination under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug exams can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine exams offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing the precision of results.
  • Provides historical data: It can indicate a trend of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot recognize recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be observable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug exams generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variances in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests in Newtown district, VA? The answer lies in superior detection accuracy. Hair testing provides an unmatched ability to reliably water drug use over an extended period. Unlike urine tests, which only cover recent substance history, hair tests offer a clear, comprehensive view, bolstering trust in results.

Newtown district employers benefit significantly from the effectiveness of hair follicle testing, which easily trumps urine testing methods. With increased detection accuracy, businesses can ensure a safer, drug-free work environment. The unparalleled consistency of hair testing results boosts confidence in its findings over the outdated urine test approach.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection windows are a standout feature of hair follicle testing in Newtown district, VA, offering insights into drug use over up to 90 days. This prolonged detection period provides employers with an extensive history of a person's substance usage, assisting in informed hiring and maintenance of a drug-free environment.

Understanding drug use over a long period is crucial for employers in Newtown district. Hair follicle tests outperform other methods, like urine tests, by offering detection periods far exceeding the norm. With detection windows reaching up to three months, employers receive a detailed view of substance habits, enhancing decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
