At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer full hair follicle drug testing services in North Springfield, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair alcohol or drug test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city across the country that can conduct a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method of drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers, courts, and individuals on probation who enforce zero-tolerance drug policies favor hair follicle drug tests. Their main advantage lies in the extended detection period, often up to 90 days. The samples are collected in a supervised setting, making them almost impossible to cheat. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by securing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and substance use. The collection process is straightforward, the risk of tampering is low, and it is convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, any positive screen requires verification for courtroom validity. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from the hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably hard to alter, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of displaying a usage pattern over time, beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Results may be influenced by hair color and individual differences in hair growth, affecting drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The popular term "hair follicle tests" actually pertains to the examination of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
