Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Opal, Virginia. Whether it's a hair drug test you need or an alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the crown—1.5 to 2 inches long—or body hair can be used. Our hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug screening processes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly favor hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests serve employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals. They offer the advantage of a longer detection period—up to 90 days—and are nearly impossible to cheat during observed collections. Despite their benefits, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly recognized as a potent means for revealing drug and alcohol consumption. The hair's structure captures enduring traces of alcohol and drugs within the strands of the hair as it grows. When secured near the scalp, hair can reveal drug use for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to assess the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of drug test samples involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into a lab’s system. This phase includes checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial evaluation for drugs. While it serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate potential drug use in the majority of cases, any positive result in Screening requires further verification for legal validity. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate supplementary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves drawing drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than methods like urine or oral fluid tests, making hair analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation process for any positive result in Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating in hair drug testing is considerably challenging, ensuring higher result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides insights into patterns of past drug use over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs do not appear in hair until approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test typically referred to as a "hair follicle test" actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Opal, VA
Hair follicle testing outperforms urine tests by providing a broader detection window and higher accuracy. While traditional urine tests are limited to recent drug use, hair tests cover up to 90 days, offering a longer-term view of substance use. This enhances the ability to enforce drug-free environments in Opal, VA.

In addition to its extensive detection range, hair testing demonstrates superior reliability by reducing false negatives common in urine tests. It strengthens trust among employers, making it a more effective tool for comprehensive drug screening protocols.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Opal, VA
One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Opal, VA, is its extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, it provides a detailed overview of an individual's substance history, far surpassing the capabilities of traditional tests.

This prolonged detection is invaluable to employers and legal authorities, offering a complete picture of a person’s substance habits. This clarity helps organizations make informed decisions about hiring and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
