Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Painter, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers across all U.S. cities prepared to execute a hair test. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is generally necessary. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Hair drug tests are now favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation subjects utilize hair follicle tests for their extended detection period up to 90 days. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be utilized. The term 'head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is processed into the laboratory's system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result at this stage must be verified for court acceptance. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

Should the sample test presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves the extraction of drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over an extended period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
