Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug assessments in Palmyra, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we focus on hair testing with facilities in cities across the Nation equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can be tailored to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing requirements.

In the past few years, using a hair follicle drug test has become a more common method for drug screening. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now mandate hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers. The key advantage of this test is its extended detection timeframe for drug use—up to 90 days—collected under direct supervision and very challenging to tamper with. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most dependable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to nearly a three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. It's uncomplicated to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we discuss head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not included via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary swift inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for courtroom acceptance. All presumptively positive Screening samples demand additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at markedly reduced concentrations than in alternate methods (such as urine or oral fluids), necessitating hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to administer.

Confirmation of a positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter period of detection.
  • Challenging to tamper: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a sequence of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Absence of recent usage detection: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
