Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Pamplin, Virginia. For those requiring either a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair tests with facilities in cities nationwide. Generally, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body can be utilized. This test can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as per requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increased as a preferred method for drug analysis. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now opt for this, as opposed to traditional urine tests. Institutions like zero-tolerance workplaces, legal entities, and probationary authorities use these tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, secured in an observed setup, ensuring it's almost fraud-proof. However, for drug usage within 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair fiber. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collecting is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch length comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. When dealing with EtG, additional tests, and/or testing above 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In case scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair encompasses other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the lab for processing a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a laboratory's system. It involves verifying the sample's sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

In Screening, there is an initial swift examination for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a notably challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments identify drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which present a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reveals historical drug use: This test can disclose a timeline of drug use over longer periods, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent drug use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
