In Pantops, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. For those requiring drug or alcohol detection via hair, we specialize in these tests, with facilities in every city Nationwide equipped to conduct them. Generally, you need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Hair analysis can pinpoint drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted. This approach is preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over the more traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services favor this method for its extended detection span, typically covering up to 90 days, observed collection protocol, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. This technique captures a lasting record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal substance use for up to a 3-month period. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests and panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It’s best to use a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The entire lab procedure for analyzing a drug sample involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start, where a sample is processed into the lab’s system. This ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial, efficient way to identify potential drug presence. While it is a cost-effective method for examining most samples, any positive screening must be validated to be court-ready. Thus, any positive screens require further confirmation.

If initial screening suggests positivity, extra hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly smaller concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug checks particularly challenging to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronicles usage patterns: Provides insight into long-term substance use, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become evident in hair samples after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Hair attributes, such as color and growth rates, can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
