Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Paytes, Virginia. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities available in every city nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing to the typical urine analysis. Hair drug assessments cater to zero-tolerance policies of employers, legal mandates, and probation requirements. Their advantage includes a detection span up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, offering a long-term history of exposure to alcohol and other drugs. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process involves verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped appropriately, granting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for illicit drugs. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that screen presumptively positive necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and is prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Historical usage data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth fluctuations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Superior Detection Accuracy is why hair follicle testing often surpasses traditional urine tests in Paytes, VA. Hair tests provide a clear view over a more extended period, whereas urine tests may only capture recent usage. This reliability ensures a more comprehensive understanding of substance use, making hair tests a more effective choice for those valuing thoroughness over brevity.

Extended Detection Window

In Paytes, VA, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, monitoring drug use for up to 90 days. This lengthy period offers employers a complete outlook on an individual's past substance use, aiding informed decision-making. Unlike brief-term tests, hair testing covers a wider time frame, revealing a detailed employment or applicant drug history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Paytes, VA is a key advantage. Hair samples, once collected, are nearly impossible to adulterate, ensuring reliable and unquestionable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
