Located in Pimmit Hills, VA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialized centers offer these services across the nation. Most tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for accurate results. The tests can detect substances like drugs, alcohol, and other specific compounds.

More and more, drug testing methods have shifted towards hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer this over the traditional urine test. Organizations with strict no-drug policies and legal authorities favor this method because it detects drug use for up to 90 days and is collected securely, making it very reliable. However, if recent drug use is a concern, urine tests remain the best choice for the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, hair furnishes a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other substances. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 90-day detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, specific add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the initial sample processing into a laboratory’s system. This process encompasses verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system did not provide.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, yet positive screenings require confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is considered the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmatory testing of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive outcomes undergo necessary washing. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reports historical use: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to identify recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs relative to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
