Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Port Royal, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our company excels in hair testing, offering locations nationwide, including all major cities, for hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for detecting drug use. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests, especially for zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements. Hair tests offer a prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, involve supervised collection, and are difficult to manipulate. However, for substances used in the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands as they grow, offering a lengthy retrospective of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption history for up to three months approximately. Collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) at the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or testing over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair might be utilized. References to head hair are specific to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure encompasses four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially entering the sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes necessary data recording absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary drug check. While cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most instances, a positive result in Screening mandates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any sample testing as positive during Screening requires further verification.

Should a sample test positively during Screening, additional hair is procured from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair testing the most complex method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for verifying positive Screening results. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo necessary cleaning. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation conforms to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: This method identifies drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in falsifying hair drug test results enhances accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can track drug use patterns over time, beyond just current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Strands show drug presence only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing can be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair traits like color and personal growth variations may impact drug metabolite levels.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
