Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Quantico Station, Virginia. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have facilities across the nation to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required from the head or other body areas for analysis. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

The trend of using hair follicle drug testing is growing among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, who now prefer it over conventional urine tests. Used chiefly by those with zero-tolerance policies, this method is favored for its longer drug detection period of up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and its immunity to deception. Although, for detecting very recent drug use, urine tests remain the accurate standard for the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longer-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to temper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial input into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage from most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

For samples testing positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the more challenging methods to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques perform Confirmation of positive screening results. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation aligns with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection time.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are highly tamper-resistant, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical perspective: It demonstrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Quantico Station, VA, hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests with several distinct advantages. Accuracy and reliability define hair follicle tests, enabling the detection of substances over an extended timeframe, which urine tests cannot match.

The superior detection period of hair testing ensures that employers and authorities have a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, bolstering policy adherence and legal compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
