Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Rockwood, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair examinations, with examination centers available in cities across the country ready to execute these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body may be collected. Hair analyses can evaluate the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific requirements.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. A myriad of employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse sectors are mandating hair drug tests over traditional urine examinations. Zero-tolerance policy employers, the judiciary, and probationary individuals frequently adopt hair follicle drug tests. The notable advantage of such tests is the extended detection period for drug usage, which is generally up to 90 days, implemented through a supervised collection process, and is notoriously difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine exam remains the most precise test available.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. It is straightforward to collect, not easily altered, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When indicating head hair, this pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a laboratory’s system initially. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any further data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial rapid analysis for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical technique to eliminate drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screening is necessary for legal admissibility. Any sample that shows a presumptive positive result in Screening requires further confirmation.

With a sample deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Integrity of results: The difficulty in tampering with hair drug tests enhances result accuracy.
  • Patterns of use: They can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Price: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
