Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saluda, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide, including all cities. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the crown or body, is necessary for testing, capable of analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle testing. This method is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation find hair follicle tests beneficial. One major advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with results obtained from a supervised process, making it hard to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage. When taken from the scalp, hair can show drug activity up to roughly three months back. It is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, amounting to about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimum for screening and verification. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where a sample is entered into a lab’s records. This step ensures the sample’s seal and shipping are intact, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use for most specimens, any positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positive outcomes in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples that show presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, samples tested presumptively positive are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days.
  • High resistance to deception: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing result reliability.
  • Historical usage information: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days following drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
