Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Sandy Level, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers nationwide ready to administer the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a more prevalent method for conducting drug screenings. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often replace standard urine tests with hair drug tests. Preferred by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, hair follicle tests offer an extensive detection period, up to 90 days, with collection under supervision, making them tough to outsmart. For drug use within the recent 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tricky to tamper with, and easily mailed.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, containing approximately 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of processing a sample within a lab's system. This step involves verifying accurate sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry outside of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, confirmation is required for any positive trial to be legally viable in court. Samples that show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase need subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), resulting in hair drug screening being the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sandy Level, VA, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Superior Detection: Unlike urine tests, hair tests detect drug usage over an extended period, providing a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use. This makes them particularly suitable for long-term assessments rather than recent drug consumption.

A noteworthy advantage is the reliability that hair tests bring compared to urine tests, which can be more easily tampered with or influenced by recent dietary choices. Reliability: Hair testing results in fewer false negatives and is considered one of the most trustworthy methods for substance testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Sandy Level, VA, hair follicle testing unlocks insights into drug use over an extended timeline, up to 90 days. Comprehensive Monitoring: This extended detection window offers employers a thorough perspective of a person’s substance history over several months, rather than just days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
