Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Saxe, Virginia. If you require drug or alcohol hair screening, our expertise lies in this area, offering facilities nationwide, including all cities, for conducting hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for various other purposes.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly replaced traditional methods. It's often preferred by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation cases utilize hair tests. Its major advantage is longer drug detection—up to 90 days—via an observed process that's hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a comprehensive record over time by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month span of detection for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for both initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels surpassing 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen within a lab's system. This step checks the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and concludes any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive finding in Screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that initially test positive need additional confirmation.

If a sample initially tests positive at the Screening stage, additional hair from the initial collection is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive results are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Attributes like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saxe, VA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair analysis provides a broader detection window, making it ideal for spotting long-term substance use. Its precision means fewer false results, giving employers and institutions a clearer and more trustworthy assessment of substance history.

Extended Detection Window

With the extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Saxe, VA, employers gain a comprehensive overview of substance use history. Capable of identifying drug consumption up to 90 days prior, it allows a deeper insight into patterns of use or misuse. This feature proves invaluable for businesses seeking a detailed picture of prospective hires or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Saxe, VA, hair follicle tests present a formidable barrier against tampering and adulteration. The integrity of the sample is maintained through stringent collection procedures, drastically limiting possibilities for manipulation. As a result, the outcomes are consistently reliable, providing conclusive evidence that's hard to dispute, ensuring confidence in the results obtained.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
