Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services in Scotland, Virginia. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, featuring testing centers across every city Nationwide capable of administering hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests are viable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing procedures has become more commonplace. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation find the hair follicle drug tests indispensable. The primary advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it nearly foolproof against tampering. Conversely, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use detection within a period of five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates long-term consumption data of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs that can extend to roughly three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp is recommended to yield 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of introducing a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening is an initial quick examination for drugs of abuse. Although screening is a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be considered valid in legal situations. Samples presumptively positive during screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further extraction. At this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most complex technique to administer.

Any positive results from screening undergo confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug usage up to 90 days in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers long-term data: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over a period, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Differences in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
