Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Scottsville, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with our centers available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services rely on hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, often up to 90 days, and because they are administered under supervision, making them difficult to falsify. For screening recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. This method captures a comprehensive history of substance use by encapsulating drug markers within the hair's fibers. With samples taken near the scalp, hair testing can offer a detection period extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both preliminary screening and detailed confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's prudent to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, equivalent body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically means scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Drug test processing in a lab involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first logged into the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data not entered through an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid assessment for drugs. Though Screening is an economical method to disregard drug usage in most samples, positive findings require confirmation for courtroom validity. Any sample suspected of positivity in Screening needs additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than typically found in methods like urine or saliva testing, accentuating why hair drug testing stands as the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes occurs via techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation, when necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the standards of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can notice drug use extending up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to bypass: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical usage patterns: It offers a timeline of drug consumption rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent detection: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like natural hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
