Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in South Chesconessex, Virginia. Specializing in hair drug tests, our centers are located nationwide. Require a hair or alcohol test? Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair suffices. Hair tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing solutions.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has surged recently. More employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. They're ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal settings, and probation scenarios. A major advantage is the prolonged detection period, usually up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, reducing tampering risk. Yet, for detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to an estimated 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch piece containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the prime sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent portion of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The primary phases involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug consumption in most cases, a positive screen needs validation to be permissible in legal contexts. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and gets ready for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby rendering hair drug testing as the toughest technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It’s exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a historic usage pattern over a duration, exceeding just the immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incipient use undetectable: A span of approximately 5-7 days is needed for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis primarily targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
