Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in South Riding, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this service, with test centers spread across cities Nationwide. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body available for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized testing options.

Recently, methods for drug testing have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers may use hair follicle drug tests for their benefits, including a longer drug use detection window of up to 90 days. They are conducted under supervision and are difficult to manipulate. However, the urine test remains the best choice for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained traction as an effective method for identifying substance use of both drugs and alcohol. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for these substances. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

To obtain the ideal sample for analysis and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) comprising around 200 hairs closest to the scalp will weigh 100mg. For tests involving EtG, added elements, or more than ten panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. The use of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing protocol encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This incorporates validating the sample's proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data inputs not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for drugs. Though a cost-efficient measure for excluding drug usage in most samples, a favorable screening outcome necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Any samples preliminarily positive in the Screening phase require a further confirmation step.

In instances of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original sample in preparation for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair in much lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo a washing process, if needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the criteria of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to falsification: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: They offer a drug use pattern over time, instead of evidence of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
