Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in South Run, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for such tests. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our centers nationwide, including all cities, are equipped for hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is enough from the head's crown or body for assorted custom tests. These analyses include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair tests.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly popular method for screenings. They're favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies and courts need a reliable way to track drug use. The significant advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use over 90 days, observed correctly and hard to falsify. For detecting recent drug use, under five days, urine tests remain the go-to choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair allows for a detailed historical record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be substituted. References to head hair are specifically about scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other body hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab process for handling a drug test sample incorporates four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary stage of inputting a specimen into a lab system. This step includes confirming correct sealing and shipping of the sample, giving it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any data entry gaps not captured by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug abuse presence. While Screening is economical for clearing the majority of samples, positive outcomes must undergo confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need further reconfirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. During this phase, substances are removed from hair concentration levels notably lower than other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug testing a complex process.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples receive a cleaning prior to necessary confirmation. The thorough lab procedure—from Accessioning to Confirmation—adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings identify substance use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It reflects a timeline of drug use over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and growth differences among individuals can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in South Run, VA, provide a considerable edge over traditional urine tests through superior accuracy and reliability. Such tests capture a broader detection window, up to 90 days, offering insights into an individual's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
