Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia. If your need includes a hair or alcohol analysis, we are experts in hair-based evaluations, with test sites present in every major city nationwide to conduct your examination. Typically, you will need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from your scalp or another body part, for testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly preferred. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is popular among employers with stringent drug-free mandates, courts, and individuals under probation. The key benefit of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over a prolonged period, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection limiting tampering possibilities. Nonetheless, for drug use within the past five days, urine testing still provides the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can deliver up to an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If head hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps included in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step entails confirming that the sample was securely sealed and properly shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more accurate findings.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time rather than just capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
