In Stanardsville, VA, Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in such tests and have centers across all cities in the nation prepared to administer a hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can evaluate the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, conducting drug tests increasingly involves using a hair follicle method. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle tests are common for employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probationary individuals. A key advantage is the extended detection duration of up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making it nearly infallible to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain most accurate for assessing very recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can hold a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake due to the capture of biomarkers along the growing hair strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and conveniently shippable.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will accumulate 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable mass of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary incorporation of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step includes confirming the sample's secure sealing and correct shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though Screening is economically efficient for dismissing drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen needs verification for legal validity. Samples indicated as positive in Screening must pass a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are taken from hair in lower concentrations than in other samples such as urine or oral fluid, underscoring the complexity involved in hair drug screenings.

Positive screen confirmations are conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples preliminarily positive require cleaning prior to confirmation. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can show drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection timelines.
  • Low risk of tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, providing more reliable results.
  • Presents historical information: It reveals a drug consumption pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug screenings typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the testing process actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
