Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Stephens City, Virginia. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities across all major cities in the Nation equipped to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is sufficient. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other specific analyses.

Recently, there's been an uptick in the utilization of hair follicle drug tests for substance screening. Many employers, legal entities, and specialists in Substance Abuse are opting for hair over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by those enforcing strict drug-free policies, such as employers with zero-tolerance stances, judicial systems, and probationary supervision. The superior advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extensive drug detection window, which can extend to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, and being extremely difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for drug usage evaluation within the recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a prolonged history of consumption. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal usage over roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug testing encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the entry of a sample into a lab’s system, verifying proper shipment and sealing, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a swift initial evaluation for drug presence. While it is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, positive screens require confirmation to hold up in legal contexts. Samples with presumptive positives necessitate secondary verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to perform.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples needing confirmation undergo washing when required. This lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited pursuant to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a timeline of drug usage rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
