Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Front Royal, VA. Our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, offering accessible testing locations. To proceed, ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available, typically from the crown or body. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method in recent years. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair testing over urine. Its main advantage is an extended detection window for drug usage, lasting up to 90 days. This test is conducted under supervision and nearly impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures extended timelines of drug and alcohol use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands’ fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, and/or those above 10 panels, 150mg is recommended. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This step involves verifying the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any other required data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Despite being a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a further confirmation procedure.

In the event of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a complex procedure to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to the Confirmation phase is audited to comply with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a longitudinal pattern of drug use, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Results variability: Various elements, such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth, can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
