Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Sudley, Virginia. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol tests, we operate testing facilities across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required to conduct these tests. Our services include analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug tests. It is increasingly utilized by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts instead of conventional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies rely on hair tests due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, secure collection process, and difficulty to tamper. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's girth) from near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is advised. If scalp hair is not an option, equivalent amounts of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in analyzing a drug test sample in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing the sample into the lab’s system. This entails checking that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, providing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data required that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening entails an initial basic assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally acceptable. Any samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to alter results: It’s incredibly hard to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of findings.
  • Tracks past activity: This method offers a record of drug use behavior over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite presence in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
