Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Sussex, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with testing centers available in cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for additional testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in conducting drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation utilize these tests. A major advantage of the hair test is its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, with a supervised collection making it nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the edge in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 strands of hair (about a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For testing such as EtG, additional panels, and/or over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, while body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening delivers an initial brief assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the starting specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a reduced detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can display a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detectability in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
