Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Triangle, Virginia. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct these analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now favoring hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary situations are increasingly reliant on hair testing. A significant advantage is its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, ensured through an observed collection process, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term profile of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped close to the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drug use. It's also easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial integration into the lab system. This includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift evaluation for illicit substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in the majority of cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Thus, specimens that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Upon a preliminary positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than used in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), underscoring why hair drug tests are particularly complex to conduct.

Positive screening results must be confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples with a presumed positive outcome are thoroughly washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days in the past, unlike urine tests that have a shorter time frame.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair tests are exceptionally hard to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: They offer a record of drug use over time, not limited to recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variance: Individual traits such as hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why should Triangle, VA consider hair follicle testing over urine tests? The benefits are clear. Hair testing showcases superior detection capabilities with a focus on accuracy, offering a window into past substance use that's more comprehensive than the standard urine test. This reliability ensures a more thorough overview, providing invaluable insights not possible with urine analysis alone.

The effectiveness of hair testing comes from its ability to profile individual substance histories with exceptional accuracy. This is a major advantage for organizations prioritizing reliable testing measures, as well as for individuals subject to compliance requirements, ensuring fair and trustworthy outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant benefits of hair follicle testing in Triangle, VA is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This lengthy timeframe allows employers to gain a detailed understanding of an individual's substance use history, providing insights beyond those offered by traditional testing methods.

This extended detection period allows for a comprehensive assessment, a critical advantage for employers looking to maintain safe and drug-free workplaces. By revealing long-term substance use patterns, it provides a clearer picture of the individual's behavior over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
