Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing in Trout Dale, Virginia. If in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialized centers across all cities nationwide are equipped to conduct hair tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is generally required. Drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing options can be analyzed through hair tests.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation authorities. Hair drug tests offer the benefit of detecting drug use over a much longer period, typically up to 90 days, following an observed collection process that is difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a powerful method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can supply an approximate 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair covers other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This process ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumed positive result in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing ahead of confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
